The Philadelphia Phillies ended April by blowing a 4-0 lead to the last place Chicago Cubs on April 30. Fortunately, Phillies fans like myself were kept at bay when Placido Polanco had a game-winning two-run double in the eighth inning anyway. However, the 6-4 victory doesn’t hide how Philadelphia nearly lost three of four games to a poor team at home, after splitting four games to the equally poor San Diego Padres the previous weekend.

Chicago Cubs ace Matt Garza is quickly becoming my favorite pitcher in the game today. After a winter full of trade rumors and talk of compensation for Theo Epstein, Garza has shown why he is so valuable to this team. On April 29, Garza capped off a month that reinforces my plea for Chicago’s general manager Jed Hoyer to sign Garza for the next three to five years. He threw seven shutout innings against the Philadelphia Phillies to pick up the win.
