The Philadelphia Phillies were making the Washington Nationals look like a brand new powerhouse this weekend. Phillies fans like myself may have to hear for some time how Bryce Harper, Stephen Strasburg and the Nationals budding stars are making Washington the biggest new threat in the NL East.

The Philadelphia Phillies had some strong expectations and hopes for facing the Washington Nationals this weekend. Phillies fans like myself at least hoped to take two of three games, finally get back over .500 and prove the Nationals are not as far along as they think they are. Instead, Philadelphia goes into the series finale on May 6 in desperate need to salvage just one win.

The Philadelphia Phillies weren’t under .500 for years until the 2012 season started. But once they fell behind .500 after opening weekend, Phillies fans like myself have wondered if they’d ever get out of it. It hasn’t been as inevitable as we expected, as Philadelphia just keeps losing opportunities to become a winning team again.

The Philadelphia Phillies experienced some very weird things in Atlanta this week, even by this weird season’s standards. First, Phillies fans like myself were stunned when they scored 13 runs on May 2 – yet even with Roy Halladay starting, it still wasn’t enough to avoid a 15-13 11 inning loss. As such, it was easy for Philadelphia to assume that if the Braves scored so much off Halladay, they would slaughter Joe Blanton on May 3 – but that too proved false.

Looks like the guys should have been playing bingo at partybingo.com rather than losing an embarrassing 15-13 loss to the Braves.

Larry Wayne’s magical mystery trip: Chipper Jones may not appear in every game on this year’s retirement tour, but it appears he’s going to do something special on the occasions that he does. The 40-year-old third baseman hit a two-run walkoff homer in the bottom of the 11th inning on Wednesday night to end a wild 15-13 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies .
”When I am in there, I want to make a splash,” Jones said. ”I did it tonight.”
The walkoff was the eighth of Chipper’s career and the scaled-back celebration at home plate signaled that he’d been there before. Actually, check that, because we know the Braves took age and injury history into consideration while lightly slapping him on the back.
