The Fightins once again struggled offensively in this their second game of the spring.   They were limited to six hits by the Blue Jays, one each for Jimmy Rollins, John Mayberry Jr., Greg Dobbs, Andy Tracy, Pablo Ozuna and Jason Ellison.   On the hill  Carlos Carrasco,J.A. Happ and Gary Majewski each threw two scoreless innings but Blaine Neal got tuned up for four earned runs in two thirds of an inning.

According to Mlbtraderumors.com the two primary lefty relievers still on the free agent market are cognizant of the need to lower their contract demands and are willing to do so.  Will Ohman seems to be very interested in pitching for a contender and specifically the Phillies.   Nomar Garciappara evidently will be making a choice soon between the Oakland A’s and the Phillies.  Also heard scuttlebutt that the A’s might be looking to relocate out of Oakland in the near future….. what about a return to Philly ?  Could we handle two big league teams again like back in the day ?  Chicago, L.A. and New York have two clubs, why not Philly ?

Non roster invitee Jeremy Slayden led the FIghtin’s offense in their Spring Training debut as he stroked two hits, one a double, in his two game at bats.  Slayden was the mid game sub for starting left fielder Raul Ibanez who stroked a RBI single in his Phillies spring debut.   Jimmy Rollins, Geoff Jenkins, Gregg Dobbs and John Mayberry Jr. had the other Phillie hits in the contest.

Jamie Moyer started the game on the hill and threw two scoreless innings. Joe Blanton pitched one inning and gave up a run.  The Pirates scored the other seven runs off middle relievers Joe Bisenius and Scott Nestor.

Last year’s # 1 draft pick Anthony Hewitt saw action at third base and went hitless in two at bats.  Chris Coste, Ronny Paulino and Lou Marson split duty behind the plate.   According to Todd Zolecki of mlb.com the Fightins are still in the hunt for Nomar Garciaparra but GM Ruben Amaro said there is a less than 50% chance of him signing.   They are also still open to signing an additional left handed reliever if possible.    Hearing rumors that fan favorite, Mr. Coste may be traded to the Mariners if Paulino proves worthy of a major league spot……. still think the team may carry three catchers if Nomar does not sign, guess if folks like Marcus Giles, Mayberry  or perhaps Miguel Cairo have decent springs they could serve as the right hand bat off bench….. we will see.

The Phillies open the home spring schedule in Clearwater tommorow against the Blue Jays. This first game was in Bradenton which is about an hour’s drive south of Clearwater.  Regular players are allowed to drive to the games rather than ride the bus if they so choose, apparently Jimmy Rollins was a bit late for the  pre game warmups as he got lost and his teammates gave him a  good natured razzing for it.

All players reported on time for the Fightins as they prepare for thier title defense.  There has been alot of trash talk already between the Phils and the rivals from New York, the Mets…… probably a good thing the Mets train on the other coast of Florida in Port St. Lucie !

Jamie Moyer offered opinion on the A-Rod steroid story stating that A-Rod’s accomplishments are now tainted and hall of fame consideration should be as well.  I agree with the wise left-hander in that regard but regardless the time frame known as “The Steroid Era” is tainted in general and I think when A-Rod is considered for the Hall of Fame it should be based on his entire career and that specific time period should not be the only consideration.  The same holds true for Barry Bonds, etc. that were noted “cheaters” during the period.

Chase Utley took ground balls at second base this week and seems to be progressing nicely after off season hip surgery.  Pedro Feliz  does not seem as far along as does Mr. Utley in the recovery of his own surgery on his back.  The Phillies have alot of veteran infielders in camp as a safeguard that either man is unable to go north on time.

Skipper Charlie Manuel stated that if the season were to start right now he would carry three catchers on the team, this makes sense in that all three are right handed hitters and the team is in need of a right hand bat off the bench.  He did not say which two would be the backups to starter Carlos Ruiz, only that Chris Coste, Ronny Paulino and Lou Marson would all be given alot of playing time this spring.  Ruiz is set to participate in the World Baseball Classic so indeed the three other catchers will have plenty of spring opportunity.

Rumblings are that the Phils have put out an open offer to each of the three left handed relievers still left on the market and that whomever accepts first can join the team.  Will Ohman, Joe Biemel and Dennys Reyes are the three targets.  The offer is suspected to be for one year only and around $1 million.    Single game tickets went on sale today for the regular season and the “ring ceremony” game where the team will receive the championship rings immediately sold out!  Phillies fans continue to support their team!

Fittingly the Philies open the 2009 spring training with pitchers and catchers reporting on Valentines Day!   An offseason love story, spurred by winning the 2008 World Series,  between the team and it’s fans thus comes to conclusion this day as it is time to get back to the true business of baseball….playing !

Skipper Charlie Manuel told the troops that it is time to put 2008 behind and begin the focus on the new season.  Resting on laurels will not be tolerated either by the skip, the veteran core of the team or at the very least, the fans!  I watched an interview with Jamie Moyer and he addressed that very same thing and how anxious he was to get started, so much so that he had trouble sleeping the night before camp opening!

Brett Myers arrived at camp as a much slimmer version, reportedly losing 30 pounds!  Myers vows to start 2009 in a much more positive fashion that he did 2008 and thus dedicated himself to a more vigorous off season workout regimen.   Myers is in the last year of a contract and is eligible for free agency after the season if he and the team do not agree on an extension.

J.C. Romero is in camp albeit will not go north with the big club as he must serve a 50 game suspension for the use of performance enhancing “vitamins”.  Romero tested positive for a banned MLB substance in 2008 and is forced to sit out almost a third of the 2009 season.

Adam Eaton is also in camp but with little or no chance at making the ballclub, Eaton is due a large sum of cash for the final year of the contract he signed three years ago but has little shot at gaining a starting spot with the Fightins this spring.  Eaton has stated that he will not accept a minor league assignment therefore the Phillies will either have to release him or attempt to trade him, any team that has interest will most likely sit and watch awaiting his release rather than reqlinquish anything in trade.

There will be a battle for the fifth starter’s spot…….. Chan Ho Park, Kyle Kendrick, J.A. Happ and Carlos Carrasco will attempt to impress the skipper enough to earn the rotation spot.  Happ may have the early edge coming in but we will see.

One thing is for certain, Cole Hamels has been named as the opening day starter by the skipper already, coming off the winning of the National League LCS and World Series MVP’s it is well deserved.

Want a true darkhorse to make the ballclub ?  How bout that Sergio Escalona ?  The 23 year old Venezualen is a lefty and might possibly earn the fill in spot till Romero is able to return ?  One to watch perhaps!

The backup catcher spot is also up for grabs apparently, defending champ Chris Coste must defend the spot against newly acquired Ronny Paulino who comes to the team from the Pittsburgh Pirates in an offseason trade.  Both catchers still have minor league options so one most likely will be asked to go the minors as an insurance policy however I have read rumblings that if Paulino wins the job that the Phillies may entertain the Florida Marlins interest in Coste in a trade.  I hope not as Mr. Coste is one of my personal favorites on the club!

He also said: “The more honest we can all be, the quicker we can get baseball [back] to where it needs to be.”

Thank you sir, I agree wholeheartedly………. lets move on.

Ryan Howard agreed on sunday to a three year $54 million contract thus avoiding arbitration.  The Phillies avoided arbitration with all players who were eligible for such.  In order to do so they increased payroll by over $30 million as compared to last year!   In my humble opinion the signing of Howard is a great thing for both sides, albeit no ill effect was noticable  last season from the arbitration hearing I had doubts that an annual ritual would have not been adverse to both sides.

The $54 million dollar three year deal will be paid $15 million for this season, $19 million for next and $20 million for 2011.  If  Big Brown continues his consistent pace of home run and RBI production it is my opinion he could have claimed in the $22 to $25 million dollar area for 2011, this deal is fair for both in that it gives Ryan security of knowing what he will be paid and the Phillies do not have the uncertainity of arbitration……. it allows all to concentrate on the task at hand, defending a championship and attempting to win more!   Good job Ruben Amaro and staff!

Rich Aurillia apparently has a minor league contract offer from the San Francisco Giants and is considering accepting it.  The Phillies seem intent on waiting out Nomar Garciaparra in hopes that he decides to play this season as a right handed bat off the bench for the Fightins.  Rumblings also are that the Florida Marlins have a sincere interest in Chris Coste and that the Phillies may be receptive to a deal pending how Ronny Paulino looks this spring.  I am a huge Coste fan so I indeed hope that he sticks with the Fightins!   Rumors also are that the Atlanta Braves have pulled  the offer they made to left handed reliever Will Ohman.  Ohman reportedly had been looking for a two year contract in the $8 million dollar range, the Phillies and Mets have both seemingly expressed interest but at a much lesser payrate.  Ohman would be a nice addition to the pen especially in light of J.C. Romero’s suspension for the first 50 games of the season.   Pitchers and Catchers at weeks end, can’t wait!

One week away from the opening of spring training and major league baseball incurs yet another black eye over past times known as “The Steroid Era”.   News from SI.com attests that Alex Rodriquez, present of the New York Yankees, tested positive for anabolic steroids in 2003 while a member of the Texas Rangers.    Most of us fans would have never suspected A-Rod to be in the mix of the steroid scandal as he seemingly represented the “clean” athletes who accomplished tasks on their own merit.

It should be noted that no one should be presumed guilty before proven so but by sheer release of the story significant damage has been done.   The public distrust of major league baseball players and management is already high in light of previous findings inclusive of presumed facts that our all time home run king Barry Bonds did so with the help of steroids, having A-Rod and his clean image tainted only makes the great game of baseball have a even more damaged image.

Couple the steroid scandal with the unrealistic salaries given and demanded by the star players could indeed lead many fans taste for the game to sour to a point of prolonged indifference.  Our economic state with unemployment approaching record pace does not bode well for a profession reliant upon fans to spend already, when the impact of disregard for reality shown by exorbiant salaries and more stories of “cheating to win” get out one has to wonder why as a fan we would choose to spend hard earned dollars to support such large egos.

Major League Baseball needs to wake up quickly, it needs to formulate and enact image campaigns to repair relationships with the public before it falls too deep in the hole to recover.   Those players who used anabolic steroids need to “come clean” with the public and admit thier actions, MLB management needs to acknowledge that indeed it turned both a deaf ear and blind eye to the issue as it happened which it did while basking in the glory of “Slammin Sammy” and “McGwire” bringing the league out of the public disregard over the baseball strikes and actual cancellation of a world series due to perceived monetary greed !

Nothing is going to make the ” Steroid Era” go away, we all allowed it to happen and need to acknowledge as such and move forward.  For baseball historians put your damn “asterick” on the accomplishments made by players during the “era” but I am tired of hearing about it, having government spend taxpayer money to investigate it and having naysayers state they did not do things that ultimately will be proven that they did!

Move on Baseball before you lose the die hard fans too!  Folks like me who love the game will always be fans, sickened a bit that our heroes did not accomplish tasks without help of enhancements in times past but yet we love the game so much we will still support.  The risk at hand is the auxiliary fan who lives on the brink of support, those folks are the ones who will stop spending thier entertainment dollar on the sport if the image is not crispened……. wise up MLB or fans and revenue streams will be lost !

As spring training approaches GM Ruben Amaro and staff are still in search of a right handed bat off the bench for skipper Charlie Manuel.   Rumblings are that Nomar Garciaparra is still the primary target but Nomar is uncertain that he is in physical shape to warrant a position.  He must decide whether he will retire or attempt to play another year.  Rich Aurillia is also an apparent option that the club is considering.  If neither of those two are signed then perhaps Marcus Giles or Jason Donald might earn the spot.   In any regards adding a right hand bat would mean that either Geoff Jenkins or Matt Stairs would be dispositioned from a roster spot, rumors are that the team has marketed Jenkins but has found no takers due to the size of his contract.  Worst case scenario is not so bad in that the Phillies bench might just have three lefties, Jenkins, Stairs and Greg Dobbs.  All are proven hitters so it may work out in that regard.
